For those wanting to experience a true African safari, the way they used to be, one needs to be a little discerning about what you do and where you go. The South Luangwa National Park really is my favourite safari destination and I suppose I’m a bit of a traditionalist, that’s two good reasons why I love this product. Only a maximum of 4 guests are able to enjoy this experience at a time, walks are in the mixed woodland belt close to the main Luangwa River in the Nsefu Sector of the South Luangwa National Park. Usually guests will be transferring between Tena Tena and Nsefu camps although this is not essential and an option of 2 or 3 nights camping is possible. One night of bush-camping is not an option. Accommodation is basic at best but this experience is less about the camps and more about the walks, the excellent guiding and being out in the bush. You have a small tent with a mattress on the floor, food is prepared over the camp fire and again it’s naturally a bit more basic than one would expect from most of the permanent camps in this area. This experience, for that is what it is, is only suited to those looking for an authentic walking safari without the trappings of more sophisticated lodges and camps but for the right person it really will be the ultimate trip.
